No, not real bamboos, we're talking about Heavenly Bamboo or Nandina. Nandina domestica is a part shade to part sun loving evergreen shrub with bamboo-like foliage. It's hardy and should make it through the average westcoast winter without any too many problems. In harsh winters it may defoliate, but usually re-leafs in the spring. In areas of severe or extended cold, winter protection is recommended.
Nandina is not invasive and does not take-over the garden. It's actually a very well behaved plant and grows more more as a loose clump than a large spreading shrub. It is an excellent understory or woodland plant and can also be used in containers.
Ultimately, nandinas are very popular plants because of their attractive foliage. Delicate and airy throughout the year, many varieties turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, red or burgundy in fall Small white flowers and tiny red berries add further interest.
