They originate from the coastal forests of southern Japan and were introduced by Dutch traders into Europe in 1869. There are many cultivars available in a range of flower colours. Flowers are generally single or semi-double.
This feature is attractive in rainy climates as unlike the japonica varieties where the rain drenched brown blossoms hang onto the branch, sasanqua varieties gracefully drop their petals to the ground once finished blooming.
They are best in the garden, as they do better with some winter protection from cold winds. They can be grown singularly or as a hedge. A great location is an area that has part sun to shade, in acidic well drained soil.
Planting in an area where you can enjoy the winter blooms while passing by or through a window is ideal.
You can even espalier it against the house, where it can benefit from shelter and if the blooms are protected from winter rains they will last longer. (Be sure to water occasionally in winter and more often in summer if it is under an overhang.) Yuletide is a favourite as it has beautiful single red flowers with golden stamen centres.
