Now that the holidays have passed by, thoughts start to turn to cleanup duties. If you have a cut christmas tree, there are many places in Surrey and Langley that you can take your tree to be chipped.

2010 has certainly been an interesting year. An memorable 2010 Olympic Games, a snowless winter, a rainy spring, a see-saw summer, remnants of recession, uncertainty, hst, political turmoil and much more.

It really makes us thankful for the fact that we live and work in a business that offers something people love,an escape, a fun activity, rather than something they need to buy or something they must do.

And we're also thankful to you, the visitors, customers, the homeowners, the landscapers, and the friends who frequent our little corner of gardening paradise. Without you, we would be nothing but a patch of soil. Your love for plants and your support of us makes it all possible.

Helleborus Gold Collection: Josef Lemper & Pink Frost

The Helleborus Gold Collection, abbreviated HGC, is a group of high quality helleborus niger and hybrid plants propagated vegatively rather than by seedlings. This ensures consistency, unique identity and uniformity within the cultivar.

The Gold Collection is divided into two groups, HGC Christmas and HGC Spring.

The HGC Christmas collection features several Helleborus niger varieties:

Today's Christmas Collection feature is Helleborus niger 'Josef Lemper'. These striking plants bloom in late fall and winter providing interest to an otherwise bleak and dormant garden.

Flowering the first year, this member of the Gold Collection is long blooming, with lots of buds and blossom. Large, pure white, slightly cupped flowers age to light green. Long stems stand above the dark green foliage and carry pure white flowers that age to light green. Can also be enjoyed indoors as winter and holiday decorations and then planted outside as a long lived perennial.

This plant is an excellent addition to the winter garden as it provides wonderful and very early blooms. Deer resistance and shade tolerant. Excellent as a ground cover or specimen perennial. Grows to a height of 15 to 18 inches. Spread: 21 inches. Blooms in December to February. Hardy to USDA zone 4.

A wonderful hellebore hybrid offering a light pink coloured flower often turning dark red with maturity. Flower form is similar in appearance to Helleborus niger.Blooms in late winter, often February. Height: 6 inches. Spread: 12 inches. Best grown in shade to part shade. Perfers moist soils

Helleborus Care:
Once you decide to plant a hellebore, choose a suitable location in shade or part shade, and preferably sheltered from wind.  Soil should be well drained and rich in humus.  Ensure your new plant is planted at garden level and not too deep.  Raise it if your drainage is poor or cut in some sand into heavy soils that still drain. You will need to provide water the first year planting, and then only when it is very hot - generally in summer. Once established hellebores are an easy care plant.  Just remove old foliage in spring, and mulch, returning nutrients to the soil and protecting roots from drier weather.   Enjoy!

Five Simple Tips For Keeping Your Christmas Tree Fresh

The art of keeping your christmas tree fresh, beautiful and attractive for the holidays is a simple one. Simply follow these five steps:

Position the tree away from sources of heat like fireplaces and heaters. This not only dries the tree out faster, it also may present a fire hazard. If its comfortable, reduce the heat in the house overall. the warmer, the drier the house, the shorter the life of your cut christmas tree.

Always keep your tree stand full of water - never let it dry out. The moment the tree is dry, the timer starts and the cut begins to seal itself over. Once sealed, the tree will no longer take up water and will begin to dry out. If this happens, you will have to give the tree a fresh cut, at least one to two  inches up the trunk. This will cut away the sapped over part and enable it to bring up more water. Needless to say, this can be a pain so don't let the tree stand dry out!

Modern hi-tech stands come with low water alarms, or simply buy a tree stand with a really large water reservoir. We also carry an inexpensive stand-alone low water alarm that can be used with any christmas tree stand.

You can also use a christmas tree preservative like the Keeps-It-Green brand. It extends tree life by providing the nutrients the tree requires, retards needs drop and reduces the fire hazard. Add one ounce of for every gallon of water in the stand.


When it comes down to it, keeping your tree fresh is a simple mathematical equation. Keep more water going into the tree than the tree loses by nature evaporation.

Hence, the last option, an anti-transpirant like Wilt-Pruf. It forms a protective which holds the moisture on plant foliage thereby reducing water loss and reducing plant stress. It forms a clear, flexible film on the foliage without reducing growth. Only one application is required per season. Wilt-pruf can also be used on living plants like evergreens, azaleas, rhododendrons, boxwoods, hollies, laurels and others. You can get more information at http://www.wiltpruf.com/

Although completely underused in Pacific Northwest gardens, conifers are extremely popular plants in the east and in areas with colder, more continental climates. They add structure, foundation and year round interest to the landscape. The purpose of this post is to showcase the qualities of five completely different, interesting and eye-catching conifers. If your garden is dull, drab and boring at this time of year, maybe its time to plant a few of these evergreens:

This is an improved variety of the classic slow-growing alberta spruce with striking silvery-blue foliage. A standout for any garden. Grows to a maximum of 5-7 feet tall and to 1.5ft wide in many years. Hardy in zones 2-8

This outstanding conifer is a known for its upward and back curving needles that reveal a slivery-white underside. It’s a small, very slow growing tree (approximately 5 inches per year growth) that will eventually reach 20ft. Plant it in full sun to show it off!. Well drained soil is recommended. HArdy to zone 5.

This compact member of the cedar or arborvitae genus of plants grows quickly into a stunning display of evergreen, golden-yellow foliage. Unique red stems during fall and winter add further interest. Will grow into a large tree (60+ feet) over its lifespan, so either keep it pruned or give it space.
